'TUA OF DUTY' TUA RETURNS, MEETS GRIFFIS MARCH 31 IN AUCKLAND, CKP ANNOUNCES

Cedric Kushner Promotions

Former No. 1 heavyweight contender David Tua begins his long-awaited and eagerly anticipated return March 31 in Auckland, New Zealand, it was announced today by Cedric Kushner.

Tua faces American Talmadge Griffis in a 10-round bout, Kushner said at a news conference in Auckland.

It will be first fight in two years and two days for the popular Tua, regarded as one of the most powerful, electrifying and entertaining heavyweights the division has seen in many years.

"David's return puts much-needed punch and excitement in the heavyweight division," said Kushner. "It's a breath of fresh air at a time when it's most needed.

"It promises to be a thrilling event because this is what fight fans around the world have been waiting for, the reemergence of David Tua."

The Tua-Griffis bout has generated an unprecedented response in New Zealand, said Kushner.

"The level of enthusiasm and support in New Zealand is tremendous, both from fight fans and from the corporate community," said Kushner. "I am convinced that we will have a capacity crowd in this beautiful arena, and Tua's return to the ring will generate similar excitement and interest in the United States and around the world as well.

"Everybody is waiting for Tua to come back and show his devastating power that will make him heavyweight champion in 2005."

The 32-year-old Tua has a record of 42-3-1 with 37 knockouts.

"I think David will propel himself to the top of the ratings after one or two bouts," said Kushner. "The boxing community knows his capabilities, which include a 19-second first-round knockout over current World Boxing Association heavyweight champion John Ruiz."

Griffis, from Colorado Springs, Colo., has a record of 22-5-3 with 14 knockouts. Kushner said, "Griffis is a capable opponent who comes to fight and will be a solid test for Tua in his return."
