Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero breaks it down with HCB

Isaac Barrio - 4/12/2005

As one star fades away another always arises to shine bright amid the darkness that is the boxing landscape. Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero is this arising star. Bleased with God given talent, The Ghost is starting to run roughshod through the Featherweight division. Fresh off an impressive TKO victory over a gritty and game Adrian Valdez, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero took time out of his busy schedule to speak with Hardcore Boxing's Isaac Barrio. Here is what the future champ had to say.

I.Barrio: Congrats on your impressive victory. Describe your bout against Adrian Valdez.

I came ready to fight. Valdez was a really tough guy. He was a southpaw and when two southpaws fight it is always awkward. He gave tremendous movement and wanted to counter punch. He had me on my toes and I had to track him down. In the end, I was bigger, stronger, and Faster. My Jab really dictated the fight.

I.Barrio: Things got a little heated near the end of the fight. Describe how you closed the show and what did Valdez say to you after the fight?

He got kind of heated in the last round. I won every round so he knew he needed a KO if he wanted to win. He opened up and got wild. I stayed back and used my jab to set up my power shots. My power shots really devastated and buzzed him. It was a good stoppage by the ref because he would have got hurt very bad. In the end he really did not have anything to say. I went up to him and said a little prayer and just congratulated him on lasting 12 round with me.

I.Barrio: Describe what it is like working with John Bray.

It has been great working with John Bray. He really guided me through this fight. He kept me relaxed and had me work my jab, cut the ring, and use my footwork. John is one of the top young trainers in boxing and he is going to be the best. He has so much to bring to the game and he is going to take me to that title. We are going to dominate the featherweight division.

I.Barrio: You recently brought Shelly Finkel on as co-manager. Who's decision was this and what doors do you think he will open for you?

Bringing Shelly on was Bob Santos, my manger, idea. We felt it was our best move ever to sign with him. He brings a lot to the table. He has a stable of superstars and I feel like he can take me where I need to go. I have a lot of confidence in Shelly and he is going to make me one of the superstars of Boxing.

I.Barrio: How long do you take off after fights before you head back to the gym? What do you like to do on your off time?

Well, right now I just had a newborn daughter. My wife had the baby three weeks ago. So you know, I'm going to go back and just spend time with them. About 2 ½ weeks and I'm back in the gym. I stay in decent shape and I stay ready to go at all times.

I.Barrio: As your stardom continues to rise, are you starting to feel any of the pressures that come along with this sudden fame?

No, I never have pressure on me. I put everything in Jesus Christ hands. I put all pressures on him, everything that has to do with boxing and just life in general. I ask him to work out all my problems.

I.Barrio: You look like your body is starting to fill out. You are getting noticeably bigger. Do you do weights as part of you training? And Do you think you will stay fighting at your current weight class?

I don't mess around with weights at all. I do a lot of repetition workouts. A lot of sit ups, pulls ups, and dips. I'm making weight very easy. No problems at all and I feel that I'm going to be at my weight for a fairly long time.

I.Barrio: You always praise God after your fights. Describe your faith to our readers.

My faith is my everything. My faith in Jesus Christ means everything. I know that without Jesus Christ none of this would be possible. I'm going to raise my daughter in Christ. All my talent, signing with Shelly, signing with Bray, starting out with Dan Goossen, and fighting on Showtime would not be possible without Jesus Christ. Me being here period..I mean if it wasn't for Jesus Christ I would not be here. All my glory, all my faith is in him. Praising him is how I express myself. Doing interviews and being on TV is my chance to express who I am and what I believe. I think boxing has been a great way to give God all the glory.

I.Barrio: Who do you want to fight next? Do you have any preferences?

Right now I want to fight the best in the weight class and the best is Juan Manuel Marquez. He is a great champion, he is the unified champ and the best in the weight class. That is who I want to fight. To be the best you have to fight the best. I. Barrio: What is you teams timeline before you fight for a major title? The plan is to get two or three more bouts under my belt with John Bray. So we can get more established and comfortable with him. When the time comes to fight for a title we will be ready for it.

I. Barrio: Thank you for your time. What message do you want to leave your fans with?

God Bless them all and thank you for watching. Big things are going to be happening.
